I arrived in my new East Hampton home last night for the first time since signing the lease a few weekes ago. I rented a lovely home for two years that I can enjoy with friends and family as a year round getaway. Last summer I came out East for the first time. I rented a house in the Northwest woods. It was my first summer "off" so to speak, having worked prior to that almost 7 days a week what seemed like non stop for more than ten years. That summer was a much needed break. What I learned from that experience is one summer, three short months out here is not enough.
The sadness and withdrawal from the quiet and the nature I experienced when my lease was over last September put me in a total funk. I almost rented a house on Labor day weekend last year for year round use just so the pleasure didn't have to end so abruptly. But then the worry and the financial concerns started to creep in. When you rent a house, you are still responsible for all the utilities and upkeep. Was a really ready for all that responsibilty on top of all my current responsibilties? I wasn't sure. So back to the City I went. Luckily I had made a good friend out here that summer so I was able to visit some nice fall weekends. But now I am here in my own sanctuary as I have a feeling I will be calling this house. And I couldn't be happier. As I drove down the driveway last night, I sat in the car a minute just reflecting. Wow. I started my business out of a 500 square foot one bedroom walk up and now I have a 2nd home. Renting or not, this place is mine for the next two years. My domain. My hardwork paid off. My decor. My space. I am so grateful.
