The Lower East side has no shortage of great food and excellent restaurants. Clinton Street, between Houston and Delancey, is a mecca for food enthusiasts. You will have to fight the morning crowd for brunch at The Clinton Street Baking Co, but the fight is worth it! (Have the pancakes!). Falai (Clinton & Rivington) serves scrumptious pastries and deserts (as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner) in a cozy, bright atmosphere (and if you're lucky to be around near closing you can score some free pastries as they prepare fresh for tomorrow!). Also on Clinton is down-home and comfortable Lotus Cafe (a somewhat "locals only" affair) and the tiny Cube 63 which serves arguably some of the best sushi in New York in a sleek, trendy (albeit very small!) space. Rounding out the Clinton Street gauntlet is 1492 Food for awesome tapas and 71 Clinton Fresh Food for haute fusion. Rivington Street also offers great fare finds from yummy sandwiches at Tiny's to vegetarian at Teany's (we like small things down here). If you've got a sweet tooth the best cupcakes are at Sunshine Sweet Bakery (Ludlow and Rivington), the best doughnuts are at Doughnut Plant (379 Grand Street), and the best ice cream is at Il Laboratorio del Gelato at 95 Orchard just south of Delancey. Also be sure to check out Babycakes Bakery on Broome (between Essex and Orchard) for delicious wheat and gluten-free deserts (yes, wheat and gluten-free can be called "delicious"!). Of course, eating in the LES would not be complete without a trip to the famous Katz's Deli where the infamous scene from "When Harry Met Sally" was filmed. Bring your appetite...these sandwiches are HUGE! Other great places to try are the bright and San Francisco-hippie-inspired Flowers Cafe (Essex and Grand) for soup, sandwiches, smoothies, and sweets and El Bocadito at 79 Orchard for yummy, authentic Mexican. Hungry yet?
