The past several years has brought many changes to the Lower East Side. This once rough neighborhood has flourished into one of the most desirable and heavily sought-after areas in Manhattan. With the influx of people moving to this diverse downtown area, the LES has also seen a flourish of arts and culture. The Henry Street Settlement Theater and Abrons Art Center on Grand Street play host to a large calendar of events from plays and galas to art, yoga, acting and dance classes for youth and adults alike (www.henrystreet.org). At 108 Orachard Street is the famous Lower East Side Tennement Museum (www.tenement.org). A visit to the museum takes visitors through this historic building as they learn about the Lower East Side's vibrant immigrant history. The museum also has many educational and community outreach programs for students and people of all ages, and activities including the noted Lower East Side Stories Walking Tour. After a tour, stop by the museum's gift shop or across the street for lunch at local favorite 88 Orchard Cafe where you can enjoy awesome food and people watch on a busy weekend afternoon (there is also free wireless internet and board games to play in the cozy downstairs alcove). The LES is also home to several art galleries and project spaces. On Orchard Street alone there are seven: The Big Cat Gallery, Mark Miller Gallery, NakedEye, Orchard Street Gallery, The Reed Space, To Make a Better Place, and Transplant Gallery. Also in the area is Artist Allliance at 120 Essex St. and Participant on Rivington with a new space on Ludlow called "Grand Opening" opening in late spring 2006. Grand Opening will host various art, film, and entertainment events and activities. Also in the LES is famous art-house theater, Sunshine Cinema, located at 143 East Houston which has been voted "Best Art-House Theater NYC" by TimeOut New York and where you can catch the latest indie films and old classics. Enjoy!
