Its Saturday night and Manhattan's Lower East Side transforms into what looks like Daytona Beach at spring break. Uptowners (and downtowners alike) descend on the streets between Houston and Rivington--and with good reason. This new "it" neighborhood plays home to a trendy and diverse crowd of artists, writers, designers, and foodies which make for eating out and shopping in the LES a more authentic experience than touristy SoHo. Clinton Street is the downtown destination for restaurant-goers and food lovers alike. Duck into any of the places along this street and you will never be disappointed. The Clinton Street Baking Co. is a favorite for brunch and dinner, Lotus Cafe is a local hangout for writers (Apple hardware required) serving good, cheap sandwhiches and light fare, and which turns into a jovial bar scene after dark,. A new addition to Clinton, Piada (between Stanton and Houston), serves up delicious, authentic Italian sandwhiches that leave your average panini in the dust. Journey on over to Rivington Street to check out the trendy Rivington Hotel which soars high above the rest of the low-slung buildings on the street. This glass and luminescent hotel is a hot spot for locals--and celebrities--alike. Its sleek decor and trend-setting crowd make it a staple destination for uptowners. If local music, funky "found" decor, and a laid back atmosphere is more your style, then head over to Ludlow and drop in The Cake Shop where the cafe and record store are open until 2am, and downstairs in the bar bands play into the wee hours. Just next door is The Pink Pony, serving great cafe fare in a comfortable, eclectic atmosphere where regular poetry readings keep up its very downtown appeal. If nothing else, the LES is a great place to people watch at night as you sit in Sweet Sunshine Bakery (Rivington, between Ludlow and Norfolk) where you can have a cupcake and watch the crowds go by in all their nighttime gusto and glee.
