Desiron D-Gallery Dec 08 | Print |  E-mail

Tueday night, December 9th, I went with the people from Tufenkian to the Desiron D-Gallery opening. Desiron, located at 151 Wooster in SoHo, manufactures modern American made furniture. Elle Decor, Electrolux and others sponsored the night. I arrived a bit early, but even so a line was forming. After checking my coat, I noticed the Tufenkian Carpets hanging immediately past the coat check. The were designed by Vicente Wolf. I have one of these rugs in a moss colorway. I love it and it looks new, even after three years of traffic, parties and dogs.

Moving through the space it sounded like a major event was happening, but the first floor seemed sparse. People were still checking their coats. Then, I noticed a staircase leading down to the second floor. Below, I discovered the source of the sounds. A very impressive crowd had already gathered. After awhile, Tufenkian's VP of Marketing, Barbara Fuller and proteges, arrived. She introduced me to the owner of Desiron, Frank Carfaro and Chinae Alexande, the Director of Public Relations and Marketing. Both were extremely busy with managing the event and making sure to say hello to everyone. We did chat for a few minutes, which was nice. They are very pleasant people.

Curiously, the nights collection had a dark industrial theme of what seemed to be found objects re-crafted into Gothic museum art. It was an interesting choice for this recession holiday. Though, I could not see any of these pieces in my home, except maybe the iron cross pillows, should I ever decide on a heavy metal motif, I liked the collection none-the-less. The skull chair and coffee table would make great set dressing for a performance art piece I wrote years ago called Rat King Art. The items I and the crowd, so it seemed from the buzz in the room, liked the most were the bikes by Hadar Metal Design, which is a company Frank works with for a variety of projects.

As the room filled, I found it difficult to take shots of the other bikes. In fact, I stumbled slightly while squeezing between some people, and touched a bike to keep my balance. Right below my fingers was a "DO NOT TOUCH" sign. I looked up and right before my eyes was Frank with a horrified stare at my fingers on the bikes metal fork.

"Oops. Sorry." I said and pulled my fingers away like a thief. "Some of these photos should show up on the blog." I told him ignoring my faux pas.

"Oh. Great." Frank said and continued mingling.

In addition to the furniture, one of the highlights was the permanent kitchen area by Electrolux. I did not shoot any stills as the room had simply become to crowded. However, my foodie friends would be jealous. Heck, I'm jealous.

As I left, Fred, the dog at the end of the video, was outside with his humans. He seemed much happier to be outside. I wonder if he will be at the next Desiron D-Gallery event. I will, assuming my blunder does not move me to the black list.

Ballona Stool The Future Perfect

In the November 2008 Met Home magazine, the *WORD section, the Balloona Stool by Natalie Kruch was featured. Natalie is a recent graduate of the University of Alberata. The author of the article Arlenee Hirst thinks this piece is "brilliant...marvelous." Myself, I think it's marvelously dumb. However, the manufacturer Umbra think it's brilliant and they have started to manufacture the piece. It is available for purchase at TheFuturePerfect.com website which has a store location in Brooklyn, NY.

115 North 6th Street
(at the corner of Berry)
Brooklyn, New York 1121

The Balloona Side Table is available for $225 and takes for to six weeks to deliver.

Hmm. I suppose this might be good in a kids room. Though, my nephews would probably tear it apart to use the balloons for a water fight, or just fun.

Note, though this piece doesn't work for me, TheFuturePerfect.com store does have some other more interesting pieces which we will review later.

Philip Pedersen

Though not in New York, I found Philip Pedersen while surfing about for some inspiration for the Already A Clown post by Grunge Ogre. The first item called "running man" struck me as appropriate, but didn't work with the concept I had in mind. However, I kept thinking about it and so decided to write this post.

Traditional Home magazine's 2008 Oceans 3 Showhouse

In the 1930's the Panoramic View Oceanfront Luxury Villas were built along the southern shore of Montauk in Long Island New York. The resort offered beach side accommodations for many a Manhattanite. At the time, it may have been idyllic for the quaint size of vertical bungalows overlooking the continuous waves. But, over the years, the small spaces fell not quite into disrepair, but the neglect typical of many a beach town. “Long in the tooth” an editor of the local guide magazine described them. “Yes, they were once very lovely.” You might have agreed had you ever noticed the villas built along the cliffs of old Montauk highway as you drive East into town. The developers, Panoramic View / Distinctive Ventures LLC, saw that once loveliness and more. In associations with Gentry Construction Inc., they have converted the villas into condos an ocean view from nearly every room.

I spotted this door in the bathroom at an otherwise unremarkable bar called Sophie’s in Alphabet City.  The color variations, textures and the tell-tale history are what struck me about this door.  Where else has this door hung?  What legends could it tell if doors could talk?  This door proves that inspiration can be found just about anywhere, including a dive bar.

The biographical page on her website simply states "Bootsy Holler is a photographer." This is true in the simplest sense, but after viewing some of the work of Ms. Holler I must say that she is also an artist, a social commentator and so many more things.
