Yikes, welcome to Manhattan dining...ever thought you'd pay $10 for a burger? $15? What about $17? Well, at Nice Matin, the Zaggat-rated French Bistro on Amsterdam and West 79th, you can indulge in their "Five Napkin Burger" and famous fries (oh, "frites," that is) for just that. But dare I say its worth every one of those Washingtons. Some friends and I recently dined at this Upper West Side standard where I debated between the oh so enticingly named hamburger and the lobster ravioli. Now I'm a petite woman but I dare say I can eat, and I love my red meat (sorry vegans...I do love Kate's Joint though!), when asked her thoughts on my menu choice dilemma, the waitress simply remarked, "Its the best hamburger you'll ever eat." Quite a bold statement indeed, and of course one that could not go unchallenged, so I was obliged to go with it. Needless to say my mouth is watering only now just thinking about it....a huge, juicy burger with sauteed onions (as only the French can do it), Swiss cheese, and red cabbage (lettuce is so plebian). C'est tres bon indeed! I ended up polishing up the entire ginormous thing, and alas, leaving no room for the warm chocolate mousse cake for dessert. Luckily for me and my cronies Nice Matin is only two blocks from Central Park (right near the American Museum of Natural History--which makes it a nice lunch spot for tourists) where we enjoyed an evening walk (and burned some of that five napkin stuff off) apres le dinner. Bon Appetite! |
